I know of very few photographers talented enough to capture stories in their pictures. Anuj does this effortlessly. His curation talent also ensures you get a complete story in photos and videos.

I have been associated with Anuj for a long time now, through his work in professional photography and adventure events management. Most recently I commissioned him for capturing emotions post the Kora Cycling Challenge in Kathmandu, and his 200+ images album has done exactly that. In an act of generosity, he also did it pro bono as a contribution to the cycling community of Nepal.

When I was told he was the head photographer at the Everest Marathon 2018, I immediately understood why.

He walked with 30 kg of equipment on his shoulders every day for 12 hours, at 3000 to 5000m elevations, while we runners were struggling just to walk with a small backpack and had regular breaks.

He always made sure to listen to each one of us and took every shot we asked for (which isn’t always the case during sport events! Normally photographers ignore people’s personal requests).

He reacted very quickly and went knee deep in freezing glacial water and ice just to get a good shot.

He never fell into a routine and always tried new shots/equipment/videos/styles.

He knew everybody in the group and quickly became known and appreciated by everybody.

His photos are technically perfect but always very creative too.

In 3 weeks I spent with him, I never heard him complain or saw him in a bad mood.

After navigating through a bunch of content developers in Kathmandu, I finally had a comfortable landing at Anuj Adhikary’s gracious company. More recently, I watched him transition from behind the camera to behind the scenes of the fantastic Snail Trail Series, a trail race in Kathmandu. As a participant in many of the races, I saw the process and execution steadily improve, including technical aspects such as timekeeping, printing of attractive race numbers, and provision of race information through a great website and creative social media posts. Having attended many races in Nepal over the years, the Series organized by Anuj and team has been by far the smoothest, professionally run one I’ve participated in, from process of registration and check in straight through to prize giving and results.

I’ve had the great pleasure of working with Anuj during my time at ECS Nepal and The Kathmandu Post where we commissioned a variety of work from him including photo essays, travelogues and feature stories. I worked with Anuj in 2016 and 2017 on a record FKT trail running attempt from Everest to Kathmandu in Nepal, called the Everest Mailrun.

I’ve hired Anuj for I think six assignments so far, so feel qualified to comment on his work and working style. Naturally I am very happy. I have signed him up for five pending assignments too, for the following reasons:

His photos are great – magazine quality. You get a great selection, good for magazine covers, center spreads and for general posting on Facebook etc. He takes time out to make “fakies” picking photogenic runners taking them to key locations, to get the mega shot, if available, that gets picked up by photo editors.

The runners are happy to see themselves in such well laid out pictures. This year all of the runners signing up for the race are signing up for a photo package add-on, so we cover the cost of Anuj’s shoot time & edit time, plus assistant.

He puts in big effort when out on the course. For the races in Nepal he also has to walk the route every day (we have no roads) carrying up to 25 kg of equipment. The course is 170 km with 12,000+/- and at altitudes of 3500-5000m.

He will work all night to get a job done on time. Not many people do this.

He’s also good with video, interviews and drone filming, so we’re getting valuable, sharable clips for facebook etc. Obviously a choice has to be made between photos and video, but his capability is there.

He’s still young and hungry, and has the energy, motivation and skills to do a great job.
